My weekend… February 25, 2008

On Thursday I left for Hartford, Connecticut to attend the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA).  Greeks from all over the Northeast attended to learn more about being a leader, the values of our Rituals, having passion, and so many more topics.

I just love these events! It is such a great way to meet new people.  I was a little disappointed that there were some people that weren’t as open-minded as I was on getting to know people.  I don’t understand because we are all part of the Greek system and we should utilize meeting each other for future ideas or support we might need.

This weekend was also my first trip to CT.  I loved it!  I am looking forward to going back very soon.

The highlight of my weekend was meeting this kid Tim who goes to school in Hoboken. He is on my list for the most interesting person I have ever met.  I was so fascinated by his story that I asked him if I could do a personality piece on him for my feature writing class.  I am really glad that he agreed.  I was thinking about just doing a phone interview, but he suggested Skype.  I have never used it before, but like this whole blogging thing, I think it is going to be a different experience.

A nice change of pace. February 18, 2008

Last week in class we talked about Malcolm Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point. I am really enjoying this book because there are so many trends I have seen spread in a short amount of time. A good example I can really relate to is Facebook. I had no idea what the website was until I came to Rider University in Fall 2004. Now, I can’t imagine life without it and I bet many people can say the same. Sad. I know. What an amazing power marketing and PR have.

I have been thinking about what it takes for just one person to deliver an idea or trend to the public. I know that it takes one very good plan to market the trend to reach the right audience that will spread the idea even more.

That brings me to blogs. I will admit, I think that they are a great way to tip a product, but how I am adjusting to writing one is still up in the air for me.

I give myself 2 more weeks before I fall in love with blogs.

Blogs: Yay or Nay? February 4, 2008

The shock of blogs has hit me once again. After class last Monday, I couldn’t stop thinking about the impact of such an informal writing style. I feel that I have spent most of my time studying PR doing the complete opposite of what David Meermam Scott is saying in The New Rules of Marketing & PR. I understand that blogs will help target specific audiences in a simplistic way, but I like trying to think of unique ways to reach people. I think that is why I went into PR because I am a creative person and I think that I can be really inventive in this particular field. I think I need to do a little more research on blogging before I throw in the towel and come right out and say, “I hate it.”
